Living in Denmark I’ve started to define happiness in terms of predictability, room to breathe and warm lights in every window in a Danish night.
There is nothing simple about being on the sidelines. When we see our loved ones struggling, there is a breaking in ourselves as well, but there is no true love without respect, without the trust that the person we cannot live without is able to navigate whatever the moment brings.
Over the past two weeks, I got to know the Queen of Denmark through the eyes and stories of her subjects.
To keep moving ahead we need to see each other in the eyes of others as in kind, compassionate mirrors. It feels to me that more and more this is a very high commodity these days.
And one day, in my twenties (the roaring 20’s), I created and believed the narrative that displaying a positive attitude, joy and gusto is dangerous. That it creates expectations in others that are unsustainable.
How would you react to the person in front of you, what would you think about them and their actions if you were told by THE authority you believe in without question that this person is doing the very best they can with what they have in this particular moment?
