“This is how it is done” is a phrase that has peppered my childhood and youth. It is easy and hard to embrace that: you don’t really have to put in much effort, except for the one to conform. And that can be burden if the soul you keep caged longs to be free.
I am wrapping up a week of choosing courage that has rendered me absolutely exhausted. Being a creature of little measure, I threw myself in the rapids with no saving grace to offer myself.
Comfort had tricked me into believing that I was all set, that the changes I needed to still make in myself were small and surface adjacent, that going forward was simply a cruising … . And when truth showed me differently, I freaked out.
The beauty of nature surrounding us these days has reminded me that peace is much closer than we think. Walking away from dinner last night,
Today we ban abortion, the right of a woman to do what she wants with her body and her life, tomorrow we remember gay people are the devil and the day after that God is actually, truly just a a white middle aged guy and every other color must take three steps back. And there you have it, back in the ages so many fought to see gone.
I am very privileged to have found the right doctors, the right meds, the right partner to support me in this sometimes daily struggle. My smiles, successes, peace are hard won and I have the luxury to ignore the world when it puts labels on things it has no idea about.
